Florence Nightingale (Armentrout, David, People Who Made a Difference.)
Published in Library Binding by The Rourke Book Company, Inc. (March, 2002)
Average review score:

Bare bonesThis is an absolutely bare-bones biography of Florence Nightingale. It's written for early readers to learn a little about this famous nurse, with nine pages of very simple text and nine pages of photos. Because the text is so limited to the basic details of her life, it is rather dry and uninspiring. The book can provide an introduction to Nightingale, but should be enhanced with some discussion or other resources. An animated film called "Florence Nightingale" from the "Animated Hero Classics" (Nest Entertainment, Inc.) is helpful in giving children a better picture of this woman who accomplished so much in the field of health care.

Fodor's 1999 Florence, Tuscany and Umbria (Fodor's Gold Guides)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (March, 1999)
Average review score:

OK, but not thoroughThis is fine if you want to hit the main tourist sites and bigger towns. However, if you really want to explore Tuscany, we used the Food Lovers Guide to Tuscany, Charming Inns and Hotels of Tuscany and Michellin. Also, the Eyewitness guide provides better coverage of Florence.

Fodor's Citypack Florence (Citypack Florence)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (November, 2003)
Average review score:

Florence City PackThe Florence City Pack did a great job of giving the top 25 sites to visit in Florence. The picutres were good as were the highlights of each cite. We also found the general city information to be helpful, for example, public restrooms and getting around.
Unfortunately, we found the hours of operation for each site were extremely unreliable, causing us to miss museums and try to build them into our schedule the next day. It seemed that this was the norm for most of the sites they listed. We ended up calling the places to get the visiting hours.
Overall, the book was helpful and easy to carry around because it fits into a pocket. The map was up to date and came in handy. I would reccommend the book as quick reference, but suggest getting a more comprehensive guide for detailed descriptions of the region and sites.

Homer's Secret Iliad: The Epic of the Night Skies Decoded
Published in Hardcover by John Murray Pubs Ltd (September, 1999)
Average review score:

Nicely written but wrong.I really enjoyed the reading untill I find that: Hector(Rigel)is killed in "the fleshy part of the neck"(p.76). This stars is actually located in the left knee(p132-231). The stars presented in the neck is Heka. It is really unfortunated that the "arche-type" is so confuselly handled.

Good Book Report BookMy 8th Grade students say this book is "Alright". They were to do a book report on a mystery of their choice. They would reccomend this book to other students.

The National Air and Space Museum ABC (ABC Series)
Published in Hardcover by Abrams Books for Young Readers (October, 1987)
Average review score:

Big Words from Little Mouths! My three year old loves this book. While he recognized some of the items (jets and kite), it was fun for him to learn new words for the alphabet (Einstein, Uranus) beyond the usual. And what a kick to hear those sophisticated words out of his little mouth! Along with the new words, the pictures drove his desire to review this book over and over again.

Paintings With Annigoni: A Halcyon Decade As a Student in Florence 1958-68
Published in Paperback by Unicorn Pr (April, 2000)
Average review score:

Apartment hunting with Dawn Cookson in FlorenceDawn Cookson recounts interesting experiences about her life in Florence, whilst studying with Annigonni. The book has several fine reproductions and is well written. Unfortunately the author spends more time recounting "her" experiences and diffuculty finding apartments in Florence than she does talking about Annigoni. I would still highly recommend this book to any one interested in Pietro Annigoni. Just don't expect to learn anything about how the artist painted (other than a recipe for egg tempera paints) .

Pancho : The Biography of Florence Lowe Barnes
Published in Paperback by Little Buttes Publishing Company ()
Average review score:

Contents: 10 --- Literary quality: 0I believe the contents in "Pancho" were very well researched, and the book includes much information I didn't know about one of my heroines. However, I firmly believe that the book could have used a good editor because of mistakes such as "maid of honor" appearing as "made of honor". This is one of about a dozen. Also, somewhere along the line, the author loses interest or something because the writing becomes sketchy, or perhaps the author is unable to progress smoothly from one very blatant item of research to another. In other words, she dumps research on us without having it flow--it simply becomes one statement after another with no connecting threads. The contents notwithstanding, the book was somewhat difficult to read through due to stopping along the way because of a misused word or sentences such as, "Pancho was livid with rage." Duh-h-h. Perhaps people are used to reading illiterate books these days, but I'm not. Unfortunately.

Poems of Christina Rossetti
Published in Hardcover by Grammercy (September, 1994)
Average review score:

the first successful pre-raphaelite poetwhatever that is supposed to mean. the poems were, on the whole, rather weak. there are some good poems in here, "Goblin Market" "Up-Hill" and a few others. what really makes the book worthwhile is the care in putting it together. the binding is high quality, the paper is extremely high quality, the art work is beautiful. it's really a book for the eye and the touch. it's a testament to the publishers.
